SaaS and the exciting new frontiers

DISCLAIMER : "The postings on this site are my own and don't necessarily represent IBM's positions, strategies or opinions."

The "Internet of Things" is sweeping across the land, changes are coming fast and hard. Technology companies are struggling to stay relevant as this Tsunami of Mobile-Cloud-Based computing, "Almost-any-thing as a Service" creates an amazing new landscape of Development opportunities.

It is an exciting time for new paradigms to emerge , old ones to be  revisited, from Large Main-Frame (thin connected clients) to Personal computers (1984 won't be like 1984) Isolated heavy clients with Lotus 123 and Word Star and then Back to Reconnecting the PC's using the Internet , Thinning the client  (Browsers), And finally the stage where the cloud is the new Mainframe as Devices get physically Lighter yet technologically heavier than those anaemic JSP Pages of days past.

In this latest twist the Concept of SaaS emerged ( 'reemerged' if you are old enough) along with (Infra Structure) ISaaS as the bases of Cloud computing, the level of Adoption of these principals varies widely from fully open ( Mobile start-ups) to fully private (Banks , Financial Institution, Government). it is the ultimate vindication for  IBM heavily criticized 'CPU based licensing' of the 80's and 90's.

IT departments and software developers are now challenged to  provide even faster services to an even larger audience, we are discovering that it is not just young people with cell phones that are more demanding but employees sitting on corporate Applications as well.

The Expectations are really high, Mobile Applications are "Free" <insert sounds of corporate fear>, fast, responsive, easy to use, released frequently,  update themselves (sometimes while we are a sleep), and above all, they are finally intelligent, surprising us with information on what we really want and/or need.

My wonders how did Google know that I am flying at a certain time ,  how did my phone know about those new ring roads leading to the airport in Cairo ?.

It is an exciting time for software developers, designers and Architects, at least those who are not fully consumed by the mundane daily crunch of Change Requests, Critical situations and DCut dates.

This Blog is intended to document my Journey in the new exciting world of Clouds, Analytics, Mobile, Saas, Big Data, NoSQL, I intend to alternate between head-down coding and Enterprise Design implications of technologies often , so stay tuned.

<Insert Star-Trek theme tune >.
